Erica’s Story: Building Connections and Community

Prior to living in her apartment in the PHSS community, Erica lived with her mom, and knew many people in her neighbourhood. Erica received support from family and community support workers. One amazing person, Melissa, who still works for Erica today, helps Erica connect to her community through art, music and community events. Melissa’s support has been important as she remained alongside Erica, offering assistance to as she transitioned to a new home.

Due to Erica’s living arrangement at the time, and her connection to her community within her apartment building, the intentional communities within PHSS seemed like the perfect fit. Erica moved into her new apartment less than a week after learning about the opportunity. PHSS staff have ensured Erica feels comfortable in new situations.

Erica’s bird – B.B – is named for her friend

Betty, Erica’s friend, will often come visit, spend time and celebrate over the holidays. It’s clear that Erica’s true gift is that of connection. That gift can be seen each day in her PHSS community, where Erica connects with other community members and people served by PHSS. On any given day, you’ll find Erica crafting, doing puzzles, playing games with others. Betty has had another great impact on Erica, as her name has been taken on by Erica’s bird – B.B.

Helen and Erica love to plan events

Another treasured friend of Erica’s is Helen. Helen has come to know her new neighbour who loves life, adventure and trying new things. Helen, who has a passion for hosting and organizing things, works alongside Erica and her support team to plan community events. While planning these events, both ladies struck up a genuine friendship. You can often find Helen and Erica celebrating various holidays together, sharing treats, baking or planning the next community gathering.  Helen often speaks about the importance of their relationship and how much she has gained from it.

Erica’s ability to pull people together has been contributing factor to the success of her wider community, and we all look forward to Erica continuing to teach others about the value of connection.
